History

95 years
in the Spanish market

 

Our origins date back to 1925, with the opening of our first establishment. A trajectory of 95 years in the wholesale distribution sector which demonstrates our experience in the industry and our knowledge of our customers’ needs.

 

We have been growing constantly, now with 70 cash & carry centres, 19 GMOil petrol stations and a network of more than 700 franchised supermarkets under the SUMA, Proxim and Spar brands (the latter only in Barcelona and Girona).

1925

Opening of the group’s first supermarket.

1970

Pioneers of the cash & carry model in Spain, opening the first 1,000m² GMcash centre in Figueres (Gerona).

1986

Our own-brand GOURMET is created.

1998

The company Agrupación Comercial is acquired. Based in Tortosa (Tarragona) and with a network of 150 supermarkets in the regions of Catalonia and Valencia.

2000

Our franchised supermarket brand SUMA was created in May of this year.

2003

Acquisition of the assets of Burgos Dilcasa, which incorporates 5 cash & carries to the GMcash brand and the wholesale network.

2006

One of the most important acquisitions to date, Puntocash, Carrefour's cash & carry subsidiary, with 29 centres.

2009

Creation of the Export and GM Food Service divisions. Thanks to them, we have boosted our international business leading us to operate in more than 40 countries and offer a service focused on the organised catering industry.

This same year, the company becomes a partner in Euromadi Ibérica SA.

2015

We join the multinational group Bright Food, based in Shanghai and leader in the food industry, which belongs to the government of the People's Republic of China.

2017

Creation of our subsidiary in China, MIC Food Trading, which has reinforced our export division and positioned us as a leading platform for the commercialisation of Spanish and European products in the Asian market.

2018

A turning point for our company. We changed our corporate identity to General Markets Food Iberica in a bid to increase internationalisation and consolidate our project to position ourselves as leaders in the HORECA market, which is reaffirmed with the inauguration of our 21,000m² logistics platform in Torrejón de Ardoz.

2019

Our cash & carry network of 73 GMcash is consolidated thanks to the acquisition of the 4 centres that Sucesores de Pedro Sorian Buforn has in Levante.
